Company Retreat Destinations in Asia: Visas, Group Sizes and Where to Start

Where to hold a company retreat in Asia in 2026: Thailand's new 30-day tourism-only entry rule, Vietnam's $25 e-visa, Bali group-size bands from 10 to 150+, and how Singapore, Tokyo and Kyoto are ranked.

There is no single best Asian country for a company retreat; it depends on what the retreat is for. One 2026 guide (MICEmakers) ranks Singapore best for business-focused retreats, and another (Midstay) ranks Bali best for remote and creative teams. Before you compare beaches and meeting rooms, though, check entry rules: they changed in Thailand this autumn, and they differ sharply between the countries below.

How we sourced this. Everything here comes from the cited pages, mostly visa guides, law-firm summaries, a venue guide and vendor or editorial articles. We found no official figures for per-person retreat costs by country, and we did not verify visa rules, costs or venue capacity for Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines or China. Rankings are editorial or vendor lists, not independent data. Treat everything as a starting point for sourcing, not a quote.

Which Asian country is best for a company retreat?

It depends on the goal. MICEmakers rates Singapore the top business-events destination in Asia for 2026, with an ideal group size of 20 to 5,000+, and rates Tokyo for 50 to 2,000+. Midstay ranks Bali best for remote and creative teams.

Two caveats. Both are editorial lists rather than measured data, and we found no tourism-board statistics on corporate retreat volume in Asia. Kyoto appears under "Asia's Best Corporate Retreat Destination 2025" on the World MICE Awards nominee page, which lists nominees, so we would not call it the winner. Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is listed on that same page as a Best MICE Hotel nominee.

In practice, that means the first decision is less about a country name and more about your team: how many people are coming, which passports they hold, and whether the agenda is mostly meetings or mostly downtime. A business-focused agenda points toward the destinations that editorial lists favour for meetings and conferences, while a creative or remote-team agenda points toward the leisure-led options. Neither ranking replaces checking visas, venue capacities and permits for your own group, which the sections below cover country by country.

Can my team enter Thailand visa-free for a retreat?

Only as tourists, and only for up to 30 days. Thailand's 60-day visa-free scheme for 93 countries, which covered tourism, short-term business and urgent work, was revoked. From 15 September 2026 it is replaced by a 30-day exemption for about 54–60 countries and territories (sources conflict), tourism only.

Business visitors must now apply for a Non-Immigrant B visa, because the exempt route no longer covers business. The 30-day exemption still covers the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Switzerland and most EU states.

We cannot tell you whether a retreat with workshops counts as business or tourism, and we offer no legal advice on it. Whether a work permit is available after visa-exempt entry is pending clarification from Thailand's Department of Employment (DOE), per Issa Compass. This is not settled, so ask the Thai embassy for your nationality before you commit.

What visa do we need for a Vietnam retreat?

Most non-ASEAN, non-European teams can use the e-visa. It is open to citizens of all countries, valid up to 90 days, and costs US$25 single-entry or US$50 multiple-entry. Standard processing takes 3 working days.

US, Canadian, Australian, Chinese and Indian citizens are not on Vietnam's 45-day visa-free list, so those teams should plan for the e-visa.

What group size suits Bali?

It depends on the property type. One retreat vendor puts boutique properties at 10–25 people, mid-size resorts at 30–50, and Club Med Bali at 50–150+ for larger groups. That page is vendor material and about 595 days old, so confirm current capacities directly.

For very large events, the Nusa Dua Hall at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center is verified by the venue at 4,400 m² with theatre capacity up to 5,000.

How much lead time do Indonesian group permits need?

One vendor article reports 4–6 weeks of lead time for MICE permits for groups above 100 people; we found no official Indonesian source, so do not treat it as a rule. The figure comes from a single vendor article. Ask your destination management company what applies to your group and your dates, and start early.

What does a Bali retreat cost per person?

We have no official per-person retreat costs for any Asian country. The only prices we found are vendor figures for Bali activities: surf lessons from $12 per person, massages from $39, cooking classes at $39, and group dinners at $15–20 per person. These may be dated, and they exclude accommodation, venue hire and flights, so use them only to sense-check an activity budget, not to price a trip.

When is MICE Show Asia 2026?

MICE Show Asia 2026 runs 21–23 October 2026 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

Which destination should we shortlist first?

Start with your headcount, nationalities and whether the agenda is mostly meetings or mostly downtime, because those three constraints shrink the destination list fastest. Start a retreat plan and we will help you match them to venues worth sourcing.

FAQ

Do we need a business visa for a company retreat in Thailand?

Possibly. Thailand's visa-exempt route now covers tourism only, and business visitors are directed to a Non-Immigrant B visa. We could not confirm whether a retreat with workshops counts as business or tourism, so check with the Thai embassy before you book.

How much is a Vietnam e-visa for a team retreat?

US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, valid up to 90 days, with standard processing of 3 working days. The e-visa is open to citizens of all countries.

How long does it take to get permits for a large retreat in Indonesia?

One vendor article reports 4–6 weeks of lead time for MICE permits for groups above 100 people. We found no official Indonesian source for that figure, so confirm it with a local destination management company.

What group size fits a Bali retreat?

One retreat vendor puts boutique properties at 10–25 people, mid-size resorts at 30–50, and Club Med Bali at 50–150+. The Nusa Dua convention centre's main hall is verified at 4,400 m² with theatre capacity up to 5,000.

Which Asian city is best for a business-focused retreat?

An editorial 2026 ranking puts Singapore first for business events, with an ideal group size of 20 to 5,000+. That is a ranking, not independent data, so weigh it against your own team's goals and travel costs.
